Oct 13, 2010 (newstodate): Serbia seemingly never gives up hopes for re-launching flights on a direct route between Belgrade and New York.
The issue has been on the agenda for years, and have been rekindled by every revision of FAA's rating of countries according to compliance with standards in the FAA Flight Aviation Safety Assessment Program.
However, Serbia remains listed in Category 2, meaning that a Serb carrier will not be allowed to establish direct flights into the US market as its aviation flight safety record fails to meet ICAO standards.
Now, Serbia is again hopeful to be lifted from Category 2 to Category 1 after the country's parliament has passed a new aviation bill to bring its civil aviation fully into line with international standards.
Serbia's national carrier JAT last performed a direct flight between Serbia and the USA in 1992.
