Oct 20, 2010 (newstodate): For some of the larger players in the forwarding business, e-booking means solid business.
-Kuehne+Nagel has a global focus on e-bookings, and for K+N in Denmark this is indeed instrumental in securing cost-efficiency and productivity, says Jens Davidsen, Kuehne+Nagel director airfreight Denmark.
-Today, e-bookings constitute about 55 percent of our total bookings, and the volume is increasing. In our dealings with major airlines like SAS, Lufthansa, KLM/Air France, e-bookings are absolutely indispensable and used to the limit.
-We may, however, not yet be reaping the ultimate benefits in productivity when it comes to booking of large consignments. Here, rates is the issue; we may have favorable rates with an airline, but when we are to book a larger shipment we will still call on the carrier to negotiate for best price. Left to the e-booking system, only the set rate will apply.
-This may still hold back the full implementation of e-bookings by forwarders, and another roadblock may be that many smaller forwarders do not have the IT systems required to utilize the e-booking potentials, says Mr Davidsen.
