Jan 07, 2010 (newstodate): The Soviet-built TU-134 is increasingly being phased out by more and more Russian and CIS operators.
In 2010 the Russian carriers Nordavia and Tatarstan Airlines are both grounding the last remaining of their TU-134 aircraft, Nordavia replacing the type with Boeing 737-500 and Tatarstan Airlines with Boeing 737-500 and Yak-42.
In both cases the uncompetitive fuel consumption and maintenance costs of the TU-134 are behind the process.
Nordavia, based at Archangelsk, operates a fleet of 17 Boeing 737-500, while Tatarstan Airlines, based at Kazan in Tatarstan, operates two Boeing 737-500 and is yet to take in Yak-42 aircraft.
Since 1963, a total of 852 TU-134 were built in many variants.
