Jan 07, 2010 (newstodate): Latvia's Riga Airport scored a hefty 22.9 percent growth in total cargo volumes in 2009, compared to the preceding year.
In total, 9,429 tonnes of cargo and mail were handled at the airport, compared to 7,669 tonnes in 2008.
It is, however, the mail volumes that boosted the airport's total figures, rising to 4,327 tonnes in 2009 after increasing 64 percent, y-o-y.
Cargo volumes remained almost unchanged at 5,101 tonnes, only 1.3 percent above last year's levels.
The airport's positive cargo performance in 2009 comes after years of negative growth in volumes that were down 7.7 percent, y-o-y, in 2008, by 35.3 percent in 2007,and by 21 percent in 2006.
During the same years the cargo volumes' proportion of the total annual volumes has dropped consistently from 83.7 percent in 2006, 73.6 percent in 2007, 65.7 percent in 2008, to 54.1 percent in 2009.
