Jan 13, 2010 (newstodate): Latvia's Riga Airport succeeded in gaining a 22.9 percent increase in total cargo volumes in 2009 - thanks to a significant increase in air mail volumes that grew by 64 percent, y-o-y.
The dominating carrier at Riga Airport is the Latvian carrier airBaltic that has contributed significantly to the success.
-It is rather simple, after all. In times marked by decreasing demand for cargo we increased our focus on air mail business. A few more accounts, a flexible pricing policy and good transit quality at Riga contributed to more than double air mail loads at Riga Airport, compared to last year, says Toms Andersons, airBaltic Head of Cargo.
-We have over 20 mail contacts now with postal authorities from Uzbekistan to Spain, and I find it natural to pursue this business as we open new destinations in new countries.
-The list of air mail customers keeps growing and with future ability to provide Cardit/Resdit messaging I am sure we shall attract even more contracts.
-As we all know, even if yields are not the best these days, air mail still fills up nicely in times of crisis. I hope to maintain these volumes even as we see that cargo volumes have been greatly improving during last two-three months.
-We do take mail business serious, and we are now in the process of installation a mail system, which will allow proper mail handling including messaging with postal authorities and mail track/trace.
-It is quite an investment from our side, but once the systems goes live we shall have top mail product to secure our future focus on air mail, says Mr Andersons.
