Jan 08, 2010 (newstodate): Despite a re-bounce in its Asian traffic in December, Finnair Cargo ended 2009 with a 12 percent over-all decline in volumes.
The carrier lifted a total of 86,969 tonnes of cargo in 2009 - a most difficult year also marked by a steep fall in rates due to low demand in the dire global financial crisis.
The carrier's crucial Asian traffic was down by 12.1 percent, to 49,290 tonnes, while the European traffic, second-largest in volumes, also dropped 11.4 percent to 18,344,3 tonnes, while the trans-Atlantic freight totaling 6,647 tonnes was down 11,5 percent, y-o-y.
December 2009 performed better, with total volumes up 6.3 percent, y-o-y, to 6,980 tonnes, including 4,980 tonnes of Asian freight that increased by 19.6 percent.
European volumes remained weak with 1,259 tonnes, down 21,9 percent, while trans-Atlantic volumes rose by 3.4 percent to 557 tonnes.
