Jan 29, 2010 (newstodate): Finland's Vaasa Airport is convinced of the prospects for positioning itself as a new important cargo airport.
The airport recently won EU approval for investments in its project that may be launched within half a year and completed with one year after start of construction works.
The airport today has no special cargo facilities, and handling of cargo shipments is performed at the passenger terminal as well as in a integrator-owned cargo terminal that is, however, only designed to handling of own express cargo.
The airport is located in the midst of an important Finnish industrial area home to more than 100 industrial companies, including ABB and companies in the wind turbine and electronics industries, exporting over 70 percent of their production.
Air cargo volumes through the airport has increased, but lack of cargo infrastructure leads to over 70 percent of the shipments being trucked out of the region to other airports.
The project for new air cargo infrastructure, including construction of a new cargo apron area and two multi-functional cargo terminals, is estimated to require investment of 15.4 mio euro.
Plans for the infrastructure construction works have been finalized, but the eventual time-frame will depend on positive financing decisions.
