Jan 11, 2009 (newstodate): Estonia's Tallinn Airport ended 2009 with a significant drop in volumes, cargo and mail included.
In total, volumes were halved, down 49.8 percent, y-o-y, to 21,001 tonnes, caused by a 52.7 percent drop in the airport's crucial cargo imports, to 18,758 tonnes.
Cargo export volumes were actually up by 5.6 percent, to 1,305 tonnes.
December 2009 fared better, with cargo imports rising 40.8 percent above last year and reaching 1,492 tonnes, and air cargo exports increased by 34.2 percent, to 105 tonnes.
In 2009, air mail exports dropped 11.7 percent to 392 tonnes, and air mail imports were up 1.9 percent to 547 tonnes.
Tallinn Airport has so far relied heavily on its import cargo volumes that are actually ex-China shipments destined for Russia via Tallinn from there the shipments are trucked into Russia.
