Jan 21, 2010 (newstodate): Plans for construction of a new international airport at Saranda in Albania have been around for years - but the problem remains the concession by the German-lead consortium TIA to operate Tirana International Airport.
Building the new airport would change the competitive situation for Tirana and thus impact on the economic conditions behind the 20-year contract.
The Albanian government is, however, intent on carrying through the plans for a new airport at Saranda as well as opening Kukes Airport, while TIA has denied any interest in taking on responsibility for either of these projects.
