Sep 21, 2009 (newstodate): Estonia's transport minister has repeatedly aired visions of turning the country's Tallinn Airport into a transfer hub for Far Eastern traffic.
-The vision remains a long-term prospect, nurtured by the fact that most air traffic between China and Europe passes over Tallinn, says Rein Loik, Tallinn Airport general manager.
-At near-by Helsinki Vantaa Airport, Finnair has been very successful in building flights between Finland and destinations in China and Japan, and we at Tallinn Airport are fully capable of handling large aircraft.
-Airlines in Estonia do not, however, have aircraft with capacity to operate longhaul flights, so we would rely on cooperation with Far Eastern airlines to realize the vision of building transfer traffic at Tallinn Airport.
-We are regularly talking to several Asian carriers, but we do not of course foresee any immediate break-through, says Mr Loik.
