Sep 23, 2009 (newstodate): Germany's Parchim International Airport has received the green lights from the German tax authorities to set up a bonded warehouse for sea freight containers.
The authorization is an important step for the airport's intentions to establish itself as a major ocean/sea/road/rail multi-modal hub for cargo transportation between Asia and Europe.
Highway A24 connects the airport with Hamburg and Berlin, 120 and 160 km away, respectively. The German railway lines run across the Airport Industrial Park, and the Baltic ports of Rostock, Wismar and Lubeck are all within 100 km from the airport.
On July 1, 2007, the airport was acquired by the Chinese logistics company LinkGlobal Logistics that plans to turn the airport into a hub for Chinese freighter traffic.
Parchim Airport will have more than 20 cargo flights per month by the end of 2009, and thus the growth of air cargo operation in 2009 will be up 50 percent on 2008.
