Sep 29, 2009 (newstodate): Baltic Cargo Center at Latvia's Riga Airport is reporting brisk business despite the sustained regional economic crisis.
During this year's first eight months, BCC handled a total of 5,220 tonnes of cargo, including trucked shipments, corresponding to an increase by 24.4 percent, y-o-y.
-Local export cargo is at about the same level as 2008, just few percents up, because airBaltic has assimilated part of the traffic served by carriers who operated at Riga Airport, says Olegs Korshe, BCC general manager.
-Local import cargo, in turn, is down by 20 percent, reflecting the recession in the local economy.
-Despite of this, the crisis has not affected us too much, because airBaltic compensates the decrease of traffic to and from Riga by growing volumes of transit, both cargo and mail.
-A certain volume of cargo and mail is coming in transit from Vilnius, Lithuania, and Tallinn, Estonia. At the moment the share of transit cargo has reached 45 percent, and the share of transit mail 69 percent.
-airBaltic's share of the total volumes handled by BCC has exceeded 80 percent of all cargo and mail. So far I do not expect sudden negative factors to emerge, and according to our forecast BCC could complete this year with about 8,000 tonnes of cargo and mail handled, says Mr Korshe.
