Sep 02, 2009 (newstodate): Discussions between the Latvian state, Riga Airport and the Turkish investment and airport management company TAV seem to be drawing on past the earlier July 7-deadline.
In March 2009 TAV was declared the winner of the tender for developing Latvia's state-owned Riga Airport, with the next step to be the formation of a JV between the airport and TAV that confirmed itself ready to start the construction of a new airport terminal and a second runway by the middle of 2010, aiming at completing the first stage in June, 2012.
The investments in the construction of the new Riga airport are estimated to reach 200250 million euro, including the building of a new passenger terminal.
But behind the delay in the process may be TAV's obvious difficulties in securing the investments, as evidenced by its problems in fulfilling another contract, won after a similar tender in August 2008, with Macedonia concerning development of Skopje Alexander the Great Airport, Ohrid St Apostle Paul Airport, and the construction of a new cargo terminal at Shtip Airport.
The Macedonian contract has also been delayed as TAV proved unable to secure the investments within the set time line, citing the current financial crisis as the reason.
