Sep 03, 2009 (newstodate): After revising the estimates for the short and medium growth in passenger volumes, Riga Airport has now recommended to the Latvian ministry of transport that the tender process with TAV be discontinued.
As winner of the tender, TAV was obliged to invest in construction of a new passenger terminal and undertake the development of the airport for a lengthy period.
While Riga Airport is still seeing its passenger volumes rising, the traffic is now increasingly dominated by transfer passenger, which significantly changes the prospects for a investor to reap a return of investments at the earlier projected pace.
The attention is therefore to be directed towards developing the transfer passenger terminal facilities rather than building a large new passenger terminal .
Riga Airport is still maintaining the vision of a growth to 30 mio passengers in 20 years - but that has become a long-term goal rather than the basis for investments in immediate construction works.
Expectations are that airBaltic may now replace TAV as the driver of the process towards expanding facilities to handle the growing transfer traffic
