Sep 16, 2009 (newstodate): In mid-October 2009 the Lithuanian government will receive the report with recommendations on the country's future airport infrastructure as well as the issue of a basic, or national airline to fill the void left by the bankruptcy of flyLAL.
The airport infrastructure will decide on the future of the country's airports at Vilnius, Kaunas and Palanga and the role to be played by each airport, which will also decide the allocation of investments in their development in the coming years.
-The issue of a basic airline will identify the country's needs for provision of direct flights from Vilnius to selected destinations, and we are now in the concluding phase of this analysis, says Rimvydas Vastakas, Vice-Minister of Transport and communications.
-In roughly a week from now we will know what are then the proposals and conclusions by the experts. It could be a new national carrier, or it could be working towards the establishing of a new pan-Baltic carrier in cooperation with Estonia and Latvia. But there are many crucial factors involved in a project like that and they will all need to be fully detailed before a decision could be made.
-In any case we will also have to work out procedures for organizing tenders for each individual route that is deemed crucial for the provision of air transportation from Vilnius. This must take into account the EU regulations and requirements.
-In any case the discussion will now start in October, stretch through November, and we will then by early December have all the details and concluding information allowing for the government's eventual decision on which way to go, says Mr Vastakas.
