Sep 03, 2009 (newstodate): Plans are on the table for turning Norway's Haugesund Karmoy Airport into a new center for uplift of fresh salmon exports shipments to the US market.
Due to the virtual production stop at Chilean salmon farms that are hit by a fish disease, prospects for Norwegian salmon exports to the US market are highly potent, and the growth rate in this segment is by far overtaking that of Norway's #1 salmon export markets in the Far East, led by Japan where little growth is seen now.
Behind the plans for freighter traffic from Haugesund is the Norwegian development organization, Lufthavnsutbyggning AS.
Also keen on securing a share in Norway's boom in the US market for salmon is the JV between Air Atlanta Icelandic and Sundt Air, Sundt Atlantic that will place one Boeing 747-200F freighter at a Norwegian base to provide uplift for the exporters.
The aircraft is currently operating for another Air Atlanta Icelandic customer but is awaited back in place in Norway as the forthcoming peak season approaches.
