Sep 04, 2009 (newstodate): After a summer break, Korean Air Cargo plans to resume the weekly Boeing 747-400F freighter service from northern Sweden's Luleaa Kallax Airport to Incheon, South Korea from September 15, 2009.
Flying in from Frankfurt, Korean Air Cargo loads Norwegian fresh salmon exports for markets in the Far East via Incheon, Korea, but plans are also to collect export shipments from the northern regions of Sweden and Finland to balance the salmon exports.
-So far we have not succeeded in attracting much cargo apart from the salmon shipments, says Jan Egil Bakkeby, Wiiks Transport AS - one of the partners behind the Kallax Cargo project also including Meyership AS, Norway, Holm Shipping AS, Norway, Kalles Bud och Transport AB, Sweden, and Kalottspedition OY, Finland, alongside the initial Swedish owners NCC, Norrporten och Luleaa County.
-We have had some non-salmon export shipments from Norway, some shipments from Sweden, but so far no shipments from Finland where a basically Swedish project seems to be less attractive in the market.
-We have also been in contact with large logistics companies like Schenker and Kuehne&Nagel, but most still prefer to sit on the fence waiting to see which way the situation turns.
-It is obvious that Korean Air Cargo will soon need to see results from this flight to justify sustained operations of the freighter service. We are, however, still confident that the freighter will prove a success, and besides hoping to see also Asian imports on the route to Kallax we are hoping for a future addition of a transatlantic flight to the USA as well as preparing for the opening of a direct rail connection from Luleaa to Oslo and further to Gothenburg, allowing for transport of loaded trailers, says Mr Bakkeby.
