Sep 08, 2009 (newstodate): Finnair Cargo is taking yet another step in moving from fixed to variable costs by outsourcing the handling of bookings for ex-Finland export shipments.
As of September 16, Finnair Cargo has contracted RTG that is already employing 100 staff for handling of Finnair's passenger bookings to also take over the handling of Finnish forwarders' telephone and electronic bookings.
-We expect the transition period to require some four to six weeks of training, but after that RTG will be fully capable of handling this business for us, says Erkka Suvikumpu, Finnair Cargo VP marketing & business development.
-As required by law, the issue is now under negotiation with the labour unions, and after that we will know how many Finnair Cargo staff will decide to move over to RTG.
-This outsourcing concerns only the Finnish airfreight market, but we will later look into the future setup in areas where we have own cargo staff, like in the UK and Germany, to see if similar solutions could be found.
-Moving from fixed costs to a situation where we pay only per transaction is one of the measures to be taken to slim the organization. While it is unfortunate to take leave of employees, we have to secure that we will be well-positioned in the market once the turn for the better occurs, says Mr Suvikumpu.
