Sep 08, 2009 (newstodate): In August 2009, Finnair Cargo noted a negative growth in all market segments, driving volumes down by 11.5 percent, y-o-y, to a total of 7,782 tonnes.
The decline hit especially hard at the carrier's crucial Asian traffic where volumes dropped 11.2 percent to 5,395 tonnes, but European volumes also fell 9.4 percent to 1,432 tonnes, and North Atlantic volumes dropped 9.9 percent to 615 tonnes.
For the period January-August 2009, Finnair Cargo reports total volumes down 19.2 percent, to 54,261 tonnes, again driven by the drop in Asian traffic by 21.2 percent to 36,622 tonnes.
Comparing August and Jan-Aug figures, the situation may however be recovering: excepting the less important domestic cargo traffic, all other markets show a gradual but manifest easing of the negative trends.
And while the cargo load factor for the first eight months of this year deteriorated by 6.7 percentage-points, the load factor improved by 2.5 percentage-points in August, primarily due to the reductions in capacity enforced by the carrier.
