Sep 14, 2009 (newstodate): The transport ministers of the three Baltic states, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania have agreed to set up an expert working group to study the prospect for a joint pan-Baltic airline.
The issue remains open, however, and only Latvia is immediately positive to the idea as its carrier airBaltic has clearly come out as the region's most successful airline and its airport, Riga Airport, has demonstrated a sustained rate of growth, overtaking its competitors in the neighbouring countries.
Another result of the transport ministers' meeting at Palanga, Lithuania, is a decision that Riga Airport must rework its current tariff structure in order to bring it in line with EU regulations.
The airport has long been criticized for favoring airBaltic operations to the detriment of other competing airlines.
