Sep 25, 2009 (newstodate): Among the Nordic countries, the Danish air cargo market is among the most affected by the global economic downturn.
-Volumes are down some 30 percent so far into 2009, and our challenge is set by the geographical closeness of Denmark to many large airfreight hubs on the European continent, within easy reach by RFS, says Kay Wichmann, Lufthansa Cargo director Nordic & Baltic region.
-Compared to Sweden and Norway, Denmark is also a rather complex market to approach as it is dominated by a a large number of small and medium-size enterprises rather than few leading key companies. This makes the market very heterogeneous.
-There are, though, some important exporters in specific industries, not least in the pharma industry that remains rather crisis-resistant by its very nature.
-Competition among airlines is, as elseswhere, very intense, and the general rates level is heavily depressed. But having said that, Lufthansa Cargo is happy to its its market share increasing by some 2.5 percentage-point in 2009, despite all difficulties.
-Approaching the end of 2009, we are seeing signs of positive developments in volumes warranting a recovery. We expect 2010 to be slightly better than 2009, although never anything like to 2008-levels, says Mr Wichmann.
