Sep 30, 2009 (newstodate): Economic crisis, falling cargo volumes and over-capacity in the aviation market has a strong impact on airlines' special cargo segments.
-When cargo capacity abounds, there is of course a preference among customers to chose cheaper forms of transportation, from air to sea and from express to general cargo, says Kay Wichmann, Lufthansa Cargo director Nordic & Baltic markets.
-The competition in the general cargo segment is therefore intense, and rates are at a low in times like these.
-There is, however, still a market for special cargo, in our case td-products, in industries like manufacturers of pharmaceutical products that require temperature-controlled transportation, in ships spares, in perishables, in VALs and in Dangerous Goods transportation.
-Our range of td-products is thus still important in the market, but marketing, promotion and re-development of these products is of course less intense these days, says Mr Wichmann.
