Sep 11, 2009 (newstodate): The transport ministers from the three Baltic countries Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania have met in Palanga, Lithuania, to discuss a range of issues concerning civil air transportation in the region.
Among the issues is a proposal to establish a joint carrier to provide the region with international traffic, and Latvia's airBaltic could reportedly by targeted as a carrier to fulfill the role.
Lithuania is as earlier reported by newstodate looking into ways to fill the void left by its former designated carrier, flyLAL that ceased operations from the start of this year, and the suggestion to set up airBaltic as a future joint Baltic carrier was reportedly vented by Lithuania's minister of transportation.
While Latvia would easily comply with the suggestion to enhance the role of its national carrier airBaltic to become the future carrier of the entire Baltic region, the focus is now on the position of Estonia where the national carrier Estonian Air is in dire financial straits and will need a solution to its problems and the sale by SAS of its share.
