Sep 16, 2009 (newstodate): Long in the pipeline, plans for developing Poland's Modlin Airport into a commercial airport aiming at serving the low-cost operator segment are now to be realized.
All signs are "go" for the construction of the new airport, 40 km from Warsaw and to be equipped with two 2,500 m runways.
The airport is designed with the capacity of handling up to 1.8 mio passengers annually, and the first phase of the project is slated for completion by 2010 already.
The project builds on a decommissioned Polish air force base, and also in the business plan for the airport are facilities for air cargo operations, and a master plan includes medium sized cargo facilities with direct access to railways and highways, and reserved sites for other potential industrial and semi-agricultural processing works.
