Aug 13, 2009 (newstodate): Transfer cargo shipments weigh heavily in Finnair Cargo's statistics.
Transfer cargo currently constitutes 65-70 percent of the company's total annual cargo volumes, 102,144 tonnes in 2008.
The bulk of the transfer cargo is generated primarily by the carrier's Asian traffic, and in 2008 more than 60 percent of the total import cargo by Finnair arrived at Helsinki Vantaa airport from Asia, continuing to various European destinations.
Some 60 percent of the carrier's transfer cargo is transported by air from Helsinki, but the remaining 40 percent is transferred by road feeder services - a proportion expected to increase as Finnair is increasingly using smaller Embraer aircraft with limited cargo capacity on its European network.
The growing importance of the company's transfer cargo may also lead Finnair Cargo to introduce an own freighter service from Helsinki in the future when the market emerges from its current downturn.
