Aug 25, 2009 (newstodate): SAS Cargo is seeing good results from the introduction of its special temperature-controlled ULD, Temptainer, from October 2008.
The company operates an initial batch of five units that are in high demand on routes to the USA and to India, transporting shipments of samples from the Danish pharmaceutical company Novo Nordisk.
Other special assignments by the Temptainer comprise shipments of Danish gourmet chocolate to Japan, and in the pipeline is a new US customer that ships vintage wines to the global marketplace.
Other business cases currently being worked on by SAS Cargo based on the Temptainer are shipments of Danish delicacies and specialties in connection with a forthcoming Danish export campaign in Tokyo, and a global transportation contract with a German biotech company that will require temperature controlled logistics.
Following on the success with the Temptainer, SAS Cargo is also now considering ordering a scaled-down version tentatively called "Slimtainer".
The Slimtainer will have the size of a euro pallet, which will allow temperature-controlled shipments sent as loose cargo in narrow-body aircraft belly-holds.
