Aug 06, 2009 (newstodate): After 43 years as the only European carrier providing direct flights from Europe to Seattle on the US west coast, SAS closed down operations on its Copenhagen-Seattle route from July 31, 2009.
The route was important also for SAS Cargo, but the company has sought other ways to cope with the situation through cooperation with partners.
From July 15, 2009 already, the existing and future Star Alliance partner, United and Continental Airlines are feeding smaller cargo shipments from Seattle, Portland, San Francisco and Los Angeles directly into SAS' destinations in Chicago, Newark and Washington.
Larger shipments of up to five tonnes are now trucked to San Francisco, where United Airlines has a wide-body connection to Washington.
Finally, SAS Cargo also offers the option of trucking non-perishables to and from Chicago.
-We started out with a very simple general cargo set-up a fortnight before the Seattle route closed down, to eliminate possible problems beforehand and to secure that everything is running smoothly from August, says Bjorn Teigen, SAS Cargo North America.
