Aug 25, 2009 (newstodate): The coming new US airline to offer Transatlantic flights to Europe, Baltia Air Lines has now turned an earlier LoI for purchase of its first Boeing 747 aircraft into a firm purchase order.
The carrier is also amidst the process of certification by the Federal Aviation Administration and expect to receive its certificate by the end of this year.
The carrier plans to start out with flights between New York and St Petersburg, Russia, and will also set up a cargo division.
After consolidation of this first route, Baltia Air Lines plans to add flights to the capital cities of Eastern Europe, including Moscow, Riga, Kiev, and Minsk at a later date.
The CEO of Baltia Air Lines, Igor Dmitrowsky, a U.S. citizen born in Latvia, owns 43 percent of the company.
