Aug 17, 2009 (newstodate): Lithuania's government is determined to sustain Vilnius Airport as the country's prime gateway amidst the severe crisis in the country's aviation industry.
-The airport accumulated a huge loss due to the bankruptcy of flyLAL. The airport still keeps the airline's debt as receivable money, but once the bankruptcy case has been closed, that money will appear as a loss, says an industry source.
-If the Lithuanian ministry of transportation decides to allow Ryanair, now flying into Kaunas Airport, access to Vilnius, this will deal a fatal blow to Kaunas Airport.
-The ministry has also been upset by the opening of flights by the Latvian carrier airBaltic at Kaunas and Palanga, and these airports have been instructed to report any future negotiations with airlines directly to the ministry, the source says.
Later this autumn the ministry will complete a comprehensive report on the country's future airport infrastructure to serve as a background for the government's negotiations and eventual ruling.
