Aug 21, 2009 (newstodate): Negotiations between the Latvian state, Riga Airport and the Turkish company TAV are still going on behind closed dors, but a decision will reportedly be reached in September, says an industry source.
The original deadline was July 7, 2009, but the parties agreed to continue negotiations beyond the target date.
In March 2009, the Turkish company TAV, together with its Latvian partner Skonto Buve, won the tender for construction of a new passenger terminal and development of a second runway by the middle of 2010, aiming at completing the first stage by June, 2012.
But the deepening financial crisis and the decline in world aviation made the Latvian state reluctant about the investment plans, and doubts were cast over the state's continued support of the projects.
Implementation of the development plans are crucial to airBaltic, and at an airport conference in Riga in April this year the carrier's CEO made clear that even if the Latvian state eventually decides not to commit itself to the project, airBaltic, together with other parties including TAV, will seek means and ways to secure the financing of the construction of a much-needed development of the infrastructure including a new passenger terminal.
