Aug 06, 2009 (newstodate): Latest statistics from Finnair Cargo prove the general trend in the industry: Volumes are still significantly down on last year, but the rate of decline is easing.
In July Finnair Cargo handled a total of 7,546 tonnes of cargo, down 12.9 percent, y-o-y, which was still relatively better than the drop over the first seven months by 20.6 percent, y-o-y, to 48,265 tonnes.
The carrier's Asian loads in July were 5,148 tonnes - down 15.6 percent, seen against a decline by 22.7 percent to 31,227 tonnes during January-July, 2009.
The opposite trend is manifest in the carrier's North Atlantic cargo volumes: In July the carrier's volumes in this segment dropped 30.7 percent to 432 tonnes, while the fall over the period was 19.1 percent to 3,354 tonnes.
The European traffic is returning to last year's levels in July, "only" 3.4 percent down, to 1,516 tonnes, while down 15.3 percent to 10,429 tonnes during the period.
Due to optimization of capacity, Finnair Cargo's cargo load factor actually improved 0.1 percentage-points to 60.8 percent, reversing the trend over the period when the cargo load factor dropped 8.1 percentage-points to 53.8 percent.
