Aug 06, 2009 (newstodate): Conditions are now gradually falling into place for the launch of an airlift operation to send Danish pigs by air to Russia.
Behind the operation is Dan-Invest, a Danish organization investing in agro-industrial projects in regions including Russia and Eastern Europe, and now fully in control of what was originally a JV with Russian partners to establish and operate new farms already built at Russia's Krasnodar and Tambov Regions for pig breeding purposes.
-We are now in final negotiations with the Danish logistics provider Blue Water, and plans are to send off the first shipment of 500 piglets from Billund Airport to Krasnodar by early October, 2009, says Frank Wennerberg, Dan-Invest managing director.
Initial plans vented already in 2007 called for airlift of up to 20,000 pigs from Billund to Russia, but the volume has been drastically reduced by the current financial crisis, falling demand in Russia and stronger competition from cheaper alternatives at lower levels of quality.
-After the first batch of pigs has been received in Russia we will of course build up volumes step by step as the market improves and the financial situation eases, says Mr Wennerberg.
