Jul 27, 2009 (newstodate): The Swedish carrier Skyways has seen its position on the new route between Vilnius, Lithuania, and Stockholm gaining momentum even through the demanding summer season.
-We had no experience with the Lithuanian market through the summer season when the business traffic is down and replaced by the tourist market. But we are quite satisfied with the performance on the route through July, says Peter Browall, Skyways CEO.
-We have managed to fill our aircraft on the twice-daily service between the two destinations, and even if yields are lower in the tourist segment the route has performed very satisfactorily. Now we are waiting for business traffic to return in two weeks' time, and we will then draw up plans accordingly.
-We are convinced that the Lithuanian market will provide further business opportunities for us, but we will have to wait till autumn to see how other airlines are planning as there is of course no sound business in competing head-on with other carriers in the limited Lithuanian market.
-Our business model builds on utilization of turboprop aircraft on routes up to two hours flying time from Vilnius, and there are several interesting options on the drawing board, says Mr Browall.
