July 03, 2009 (newstodate): The official deadline is drawing near for the final decision on the plans for developing Latvia's Riga International Airport.
In March 2009, the Turkish company TAV, together with the Latvian partner Skonto Buve, won the tender for construction of a new passenger terminal and development of a second runway by the middle of 2010, aiming at completing the first stage by June, 2012.
Since then, TAV has been negotiating with the Latvian state and Riga Airport, and a final decision is expected by July 7, 2009.
Implementation of the development plans are crucial to airBaltic and at an airport conference in Riga in April this year the carrier's CEO made clear that even if the Latvian state eventually decides not to commit itself to the project, airBaltic, together with other parties including TAV, will seek means and ways to secure the financing of the construction of a much-needed development of the infrastructure including a new passenger terminal.
