Jul 29, 2009 (newstodate): While still down 7.6 percent in total volumes during this year's first quarter, Norway is performing strongly and better than the other Scandinavian markets, Denmark and Norway, in IATA cargo exports.
Norway generated a total of 18,435 tonnes of IATA export air cargo in Q1, close to Sweden's total of 20,446 tonnes and Denmark's 13,557 tonnes.
And in Q1 Sweden's total volumes dropped 30.8 percent, while Denmark was down 28.9 percent compared to Q1/2008.
The strong Norwegian performance relied on continued growth in the country's salmon exports to the traditionally leading Far Eastern markets, but especially on a strong increase in the US market where Norway's main competitor in salmon exports, Chile is bogged down by a sustained salmon disease that will keep production at low levels for years to come.
Thus China was the single largest market for Norwegian IATA export airfreight with 4,219 tonnes, or 23.4 percent of the totals, followed by Japan with 4,192 tonnes, 22.7 percent of the total volumes.
But while the Chinese market dropped by 19.5 percent, y-o-y, and the Japanese market was unchanged, the US market increased by 19.7 percent, y-o-y, to 2,253 tonnes, or 12.2 percent of the total export volumes.
The development is spurring new initiatives in salmon export logistics, notably the launch of the JV for a trans-Atlantic Boeing 747-200F freighter service between Norway and the USA by Air Atlanta and Icelandic and Sundt Air - Sundt Atlanta Skybridge.
