Jul 27, 2009 (newstodate): Negotiations between the Latvian state and Riga Airport concerning the construction of new passenger terminal are still going on as the July 7 deadline was passed without producing a decision.
-The Latvian state asked for an extension of the negotiations, and so far no new deadline has been announced, says a source at Riga Airport.
In March 2009, the Turkish company TAV, together with its Latvian partner Skonto Buve, won the tender for construction of a new passenger terminal and development of a second runway by the middle of 2010, aiming at completing the first stage by June, 2012.
Implementation of the development plans is crucial to airBaltic, and at an airport conference in Riga in April this year the carrier's CEO made clear that even if the Latvian state eventually decides not to commit itself to the project, airBaltic, together with other parties including TAV, will seek means and ways to secure the financing of the construction of a much-needed development of the infrastructure including a new passenger terminal.
