Jul 31, 2009 (newstodate): Moscow's two leading international airports, Moscow Sheremetyevo and Moscow Domodedovo, both saw cargo volumes strongly down during the first five months of this year, according to figures from Russia's Transport Clearing House.
Moscow Domodedovo Airport declined the most, down 25.5 percent, y-o-y, to 43,396 tonnes, international and domestic airfreight included.
Moscow Sheremetyevo fared only little better with a decrease at 20.2 percent, to 55,727 tonnes.
Moscow Sheremetyevo Airport is the leading capital airport for international cargo.
Here Moscow Sheremetyevo fell 22.1 percent, to 42,431 tonnes, while Moscow Domodedovo dropped 20.4 percent to 17,722 tonnes.
On the other hand, Moscow Domodedovo is leading in domestic cargo that dropped 28.9 percent to 24,674 tonnes, while the decline in Russia's domestic cargo affected Moscow Sheremetyevo less. Here domestic cargo volumes fell 13.3 percent, to a total of 13,296 tonnes.
Moscow's third international airport, Moscow Vnukovo Airport emerged from the first five months of 2009 with a decline in total volumes at only 1.9 percent, to 10,723 tonnes.
Although international cargo volumes dropped 33.6 percent to 1,128 tonnes, this was outbalanced by a 3.9 percent increase in the airport's domestic cargo volumes at 9,595 tonnes.
