Jun 10, 2009 (newstodate): The Swedish carrier Skyways has come off to a good start for its two routes at Lithuania's Vilnius Airport.
The carrier launched flights on routes from Stockholm and Copenhagen earlier in June this year, using Fokker 50 aircraft.
-Preparations were completed with rather short notice after the final confirmations were landed, but we have had a good start to the routes, says Peter Browall, Skyways CEO.
-The route to Stockholm is served twice daily and continues during the summer season, while the once-daily route to Copenhagen is planned to be suspended during the slack month of July, returning again from mid-August.
-We are considering the opening of more routes from Vilnius to e.g. Amsterdam or Berlin, but this will be more complex and require more fresh preparations.
-Provided we can prove that there is indeed a business case for these and other proposed routes we are quite willing to step in. But while the setting up of the route between Stockholm and Vilnius comprised the ab-initio establishing of a new base organization, a route between Vilnius and another European destination like e.g. Amsterdam will require the establishing of two base organizations, which is, of course, even more demanding.
-We must therefore make sure that new routes can be operated with potentials for success and profitability before we invest in staff and equipment.
-But we have proved our concept and our commitment by stationing one Fokker 50 at Vilnius, and we will now follow the development of our first routes and the economy in the market before a final decision to move further is made, says Mr Browall.
