Jun 15, 2009 (newstodate): Palanga International Airport, in the western part of Lithuania near the Baltic Sea, is not a contender for developing airfreight business in the Baltic region.
-We are close to a resort town and operate with strict limitations that also exclude freighter operations, says an airport marketing department spokesman.
-Actually we handle only some 30 tonnes of air cargo annually as a result of scarce belly hold capacity on the small aircraft like ATR-42, Fokker 50 and SAAB 200 that are operated by the airlines here.
-Starting from today, the Russian carrier UTAir will offer two weekly seasonal flights from Moscow Vnukovo Airport, and on April 1, 2009, the Latvian carrier airBaltic added flights on a new twice-daily route from Riga, Latvia.
-Unfortunately we lost our very popular route to Hamburg as Amber Air collapsed in October, 2007. We are seeking contact with other airlines to re-open this route, but so far without success, he says.
The demise of Amber Air also cut off services to Billund, Denmark, and Warsaw, Poland.
