Jun 08, 2009 (newstodate): Martinair Cargo adds little extra color to the general picture of the declining Swedish air cargo market.
-As everyone else we see the Swedish, and indeed the Nordic markets markedly down in 2009 in both volumes and rates. The most positive thing to say is that we have, after all, succeeded in maintaining our share of the markets, and that is after all satisfactory, says Thorbjorn Lundblad, Martinair Nordic & Baltic director.
-We are rather strong in the N and S American markets as in the African cargo traffic, and while competition is fierce here as well, it may at least be slightly less so in the South American and African segments, compared to e.g. the Far East, as there are after all fewer carriers to offer a comprehensive network of flights and destinations.
-Also, especially in the case of Africa the market from Sweden is still comprising much state-financed export that is perhaps slightly less affected by the current financial and economical crisis than commercial export loads.
-We are definitely not strong in the Norwegian market that is dominated by exports of fresh fish that has historically not been our prime business. Denmark is perhaps performing comparatively better than the other Scandinavian markets, but again it is all relative to declining volumes and a steep over-all downturn.
Martinair Cargo consolidates its Swedish and Norwegian shipments at Menzies' Malmo Air Cargo, while shipments from Finland and Denmark are mostly trucked directly into Martinair's hub at Amsterdam.
