Jun 12, 2009 (newstodate): Lithuania's Siauliai International Airport is keen to expand its cargo business.
Formerly a Soviet air force base having the longest runway in the region, 3,500 m, Siauliai International Airport in Northern Lithuania today has no scheduled airline services but is developing its cargo business.
-We have a steady volume of cargo charter operations, about two or three per months, and our cargo mainly comprises exports, says Darius Vinogradovas, Siauliai International Airport ground handling manager.
-Among our prime export activities are airlifts of live animals for Israel, and we also handle volumes of food, perishables and general cargo shipments.
-Presently we have no scheduled cargo operators, but we are in the market and currently negotiating with one potential cargo airline customer that would be interested in locating operations here.
In 2007 the airport handled 1,000 tonnes of cargo, growing to more than 2,000 in 2008, and the airport still expects to grow this volume further in 2009 despite a generally weak market.
