Jun 04, 2009 (newstodate): The Latvian freight forwarding company AirKargo SIA is keen to attract more ex-China trans-shipments destined for Russia.
-We are seeing this traffic weighing heavily in Estonia's Tallinn Airport, but we would like to grow our share of this business as well, says Indulis Blums, AirKargo SIA managing director.
-We are already cooperating with agents in Tallinn and have scheduled trucking services from Tallinn that bring in cargo to Riga International Airport that is developing fast these years.
-But we must admit that the business of Russian trans-shipments builds very much on personal connections, and it takes time to establish firm business contacts that can change the flow of cargo from China to Russia. But volumes are there, and we will definitely go for it. Actually we already see a steady flow of Russian trans-shipments, but that is belly-hold cargo on passenger aircraft coming into Riga. We unfortunately do not currently have any freighter operations in this segment, allowing for containerized and out-size cargo.
-AirKargo is doing pretty well even in times like these, being among Latvia's top-5 forwarding companies with 15 staff and offices in both Riga, Latvia, and Tallinn, Estonia.
-A market of this limited size does not call for specialized freight forwarders, so we command a broad range of competencies including Dangerous Goods, live animals and perishables as well as of course any kind of general and express cargo, says Mr Blums.
