Jun 11, 2009 (newstodate): Sweden's Norrkoping Airport is seeing its cargo business declining in 2009, but on the passenger side figures are comforting.
-We are happy to have Icelandair Cargo as an operator at Norrkoping Airport, but due to the generally depressed market the carrier has reduced its operation to one or two rotations per month against the earlier more frequent flights, says Jorgen Nilsson, Jonkoping Airport marketing and sales director.
-Icelandair Cargo's freighters bring in Icelandic horses, and we have all facilities and the expertise to handle this type of shipments. But due to the less frequent flights the service has become less attractive to exporters that demand more reliable services. Icelandic horses have therefore again become the #1 priority, and we will have to wait for better time to return before we can hope for more cargo exports.
-On the positive side we have seen sustained growth in passenger figures at Norrkoping Airport during the first four months that have so far been recorded statisticlly, as the only airport in Sweden. We will probably see passenger volumes on scheduled services receding this summer, but on the other hand charter passenger volumes are growing, so we are in a good mood to celebrate our 75th anniversary in 2009 as Sweden's oldest operating airport, says Mr Nilsson.
