Jun 18, 2009 (newstodate): Breaking the waves of the global financial crisis that took a particularly heavy toll on Iceland, Icelandair Cargo is reporting a sound performance so far into 2009.
-Export volumes have increased more than 20 percent over last year's figures, while imports are still very low, says Gunnnar Mar Sigurfinsson, Icelandair Cargo general manager.
-We are currently operating a full program including two weekly freighter flights to the USA, five to British Midlands, and six to seven to Liege, and we are also selling capacity on Icelandair's passenger flights, but this is of course a tough marke with excess capacity.
-Earlier, booming imports by far exceeded the export volumes. With the new proportions between export and import cargo we are actually seeing more balanced freighter flights and are operating with a better utilisation of capacity.
-It would of course be prepostorous to predict anything about the final oputcome from 2009, but it is at least safe to say that we are doing pretty well after this first half of the year.
-Besides the reassuring trends in Iceland's air cargo scene, we are also benefiting from the harsh and timely measures taken even prior to the full outbreak of the financial and economic crisis as we adjusted capacity and organisation to the waning demands and clear signs of challenging times ahead, says mr Sigurfinsson.
