Jun 30, 2009 (newstodate): Finnish company Ospentos Oy providing cargo and freight-related business throughout Finland, the Baltic States, Poland, Belorussia, Ukraine and Kaliningrad, is seeing little comfort from the performance so far in 2009.
-The first half of this year has certainly been extremely difficult, and even if we have not down-sized our activities we are certainly facing great challenges, says Leevi Ekman, Ospontos CEO and co-owner, together with Erik Byman.
-The volumes in the Finnish airfreight market have gone down, and even in the industrial segments less affected by the current crisis, like pharmaceuticals and telecom, we are seeing more or less the same number of shipments - but declining volumes per shipment.
-We are engaged in all services pertaining to airfreight, including cargo terminal handling and road feeder services, and the picture of course remains the same everywhere. As for cargo GSA business, we are still cargo GSA in the Finnish market for SAA and Eva Air, but with rates tumbling down to almost zero, commissions are almost also at nil.
-We are therefore not pursuing further cargo GSA contracts for the time being, at least. It makes little sense, and much effort is required to collect airline surcharges that do not yield a commission. This is also little encouraging.
-If we are in a positive mood we can maybe see some slight signs of recovery now, but the are indeed still very vague. We will probably have to wait till September before we will know if the industry and the Finnish airfreight market is picking up again, says Mr Ekman.
