Jun 05, 2009 (newstodate): The Finnish air cargo market is difficult to penetrate for foreign airlines.
One case in point is the Korean Air Cargo services since the start of this year between Seoul and Sweden's Luleaa Kallax Airport, north of the Polar circle.
-Finnish forwarders and shippers are reluctant to newcomers and will always prefer to watch Finnair's moves carefully before making any commitments, says a spokesman for one of the companies behind Kallax Air Cargo that is driving the project.
-In this case the freighter project also materialized rather abruptly. This left little time for proper and usual preparation of the markets, which are supposed to be not only Norway, but also Sweden and Finland, where Luleaa Kallax Airport is ideally located to provide uplift for exporters in the northernmost region of the three countries.
-Also the current situation in the markets is not exactly helpful to the launch of a new weekly Boeing 747-400 freighter service. Still, loads of Norwegian seafood have fully lived up to expectations, and with improving market conditions and more efficient marketing and sales work Finnish exporters will undoubtedly join as well, he says.
Korean Air Cargo's sales team in Stockholm, Sweden, is also adding a Finnish-speaking person to intensify sales efforts in the Finnish market.
