Jun 02, 2009 (newstodate): Vagar Airport has signed an agreement with the companies Ramboll, Munin and Verkfrodingastovuna to project the extension of the runway.
The project comprises the drafting of a preliminary project - to be completed by August/September 2009 - which will constitute the basis for an evaluation by the authorities and a detailed cost estimation.
The companies will also be responsible for compiling the tender material, enabling the project to be offered for tender this autumn.
Plans are to extend the runway from the current 1,200 to 1,600m which would allow for Airbus A320/Boeing 737 operations without the current take-off weight restrictions also severely restricting airfreight potentials.
Also much needed is a modernisation of the passenger terminal that is planned to be expanded by 5,700 sq.m.
The projects must be completed before the delivery by the end of 2011 of the first Airbus A319 aircraft to Atlantic Airways that provides the bulk of the air traffic.
