Jun 29, 2009 (newstodate): Hard times have hit Estonian Air Cargo as any other cargo business - but it is not all bad news..
-While Estonian Air Cargo has seen its total cargo volumes down by some 30 percent in 2009, compared to last year, one market has proved to contain solid prospects of growth, says Toomas Orukivi, Estonian Air Head of Cargo.
-We have seen very good results from the increased efforts by our GSA in the US market, and imports from the USA to Estonia have increased significantly in 2009, mainly comprising consumer goods and also industrial goods including measuring equipment for various projects in the region.
-We are working closely with American Airlines in imports from the USA, while our most important partner for export to the USA is Northwest Airlines. Imports are, however, by far more important for us, with an average split between Estonian air cargo imports and exports around 70 percent versus 30 percent.
-Estonian Air is strongly focused on passengers, so air cargo takes second priority only. We are thus much hit by the changes in the carrier's route network and frequencies, and especially the closure of flights to Frankfurt that was our most important transfer hub, and a strong reduction in frequencies to London has made our competitive situation more difficult.
-We now consider Amsterdam, Brussels, Copenhagen and Stockholm to be our most important transfer hubs, while Kiev and Moscow also play a significant role for development of our cargo business, says Mr Orukivi.
