Jun 12, 2009 (newstodate): The Estonian air cargo market is hit like any other market by the general decline in volumes but is otherwise not doing too badly, according to a cargo handling company.
-Volumes are low, but the cargo is still there, says Haiti Arendi, Ospentos International managing director, Estonia.
-Tallinn Airport is performing normally without too aggressive marketing which would also be out of tune with the current market situation. Of course they cannot compare to Riga Airport that benefits from the extensive and growing cargo transfer traffic by airBaltic.
-Unfortunately we do not have an airline like airBaltic in Estonia. Our national airline, Estonian Air is working hard and successfully to rein in costs in order to preserve business, and with their decision to down-scale their aircraft from Boeing 737 to Bombardier CRJ 900 aircraft the cargo capacity of the airline will shrink further.
-This means that airline cargo trucking will become even more dominating in this market where it already outperforms flown cargo in volumes.
From January 1, 2009, Ospentos took over a 600 sq m terminal and now provides cargo handling at Tallinn Airport as the airport's second handling provider.
Ospentos plans to expand this terminal to 1,00 sq m by July, 2009, already.
