Jun 19, 2009 (newstodate): Icelandair Cargo has formulated a new strategy, replacing the earlier plans focussing on expansion.
-Formerly, the stress was on expansion and trans-Atlantic cargo between Europe and the USA via Reykjavik, says Gunnar Mar Sigurfinsson, Icelandair Cargo general manager.
-Now the focus is on serving the Icelandic market for air cargo imports and exports. Imports were growing extraordinarily big, by far exceeding the growth in exports till mid-2008. Now it is the opposite, and this has really improved the balance on the flights and also raising their profitability.
-We are certainly not excluding transfer cargo between Europe and the USA, and we will also go for any ad-hoc charter operations. But cargo to and from Iceland is now the cornerstone of our strategy, says mr Sigurfinsson.
